March Lambs
We had two new lambs hanging out in the pasture yesterday morning. One looks like he was born the night before, and the other that morning. Like their mothers, their personalities are quite different.
The little boy has a very friendly mom, always coming up to demand treats when we are out there. Her little lamb stood on my boots while we fed them, and let me pet him.
The little girl’s mom is quite skittish, freaking out and staring us down when we are out there. Her little lamb stayed behind her at all times, not coming close enough for a decent picture. It took a while to distract the mom so I could grab this little one:
This is our first lamb of the year, Frang. He was born January 4, 2011, and is not the brightest thing out there:
Triplett’s lamb was born January 22, and has no name:
And poor little Tempest (Monica’s lamb), was born the first of March, during a storm:
Unless we get our act together and start focusing on starter flocks, these cute little beasties are going in our bellies. And it would be nice to have them be human-friendly rather than just running away in blind panic. Step one, I suppose, would be finding them names and spending more time out there in the mud and the trees with them.
Do you…..eat them?
Not yet, but I envision a nice big plate of bbq in a year or so. Don’t worry, I’ll set up a nice set of pictures first, sort of like a Dexter kill-room, only it will be so we can see the cuteness that we’re eating. Unless, of course, we manage to sell them as parts of starter flocks. Want some sheep? 😀
