I was inspired. After an afternoon feeling queasy, making poor dietary choices and finding that a walk to the beach is too far, I pulled myself together and spent the night doing springs, modified crunches, performing glute exercises and practicing my warrior cry. I was full-tilt, dashing in darkness, boxers and bucket and a prayer in my heart. Oh dear dogs, please don’t be in my path . . . (more…)

Happy Birthday, Kung Fool Panda!

Our little Panda is now one year old. I would show a picture of him today, but he’s been hanging out in the dirt and REALLY needs a bath. I know there is some white under there somewhere, under all that grey and brown and maybe even a little algae green . . .

And since he is now almost as wide as he is tall, he looks kind of like a tick. Oh little Panda, don’t get wedged between the trees . . . (more…)

You are my love, you are my dreams, you are my everything

There are many advantages to a home office: Short commute, no gas costs, no traffic jams, a comfortable work environment, no pants . . . Unfortunately, there are also disadvantages. The refrigerator is only a short walk away. It is easy to forget to shower, or even get dressed for the day. Six dogs in a small house inevitably leads to the overwhelming aroma of dog flatulence . . . (more…)

The Latest in Lambs

This past week brought us two new lambs, one from Bonnie-Bell and one from Vally. The first is a tiny little ram lamb, seen in the following pictures with some other nosy little lamb (whose name, or at least lineage, I’d tell you if I could remember it at the moment). For now, we are calling him Patrick Cabbage. (more…)

Happy Nuclear St. Patrick’s Day!

I am almost 2 hours late starting, but the corned beef is now cooking. Potatoes, carrots and cabbage will come later. Maybe our impending radioactive cloud will cause the beer to glow green and we will be ultra-authentic! There’s no cooking quite like nuclear cooking.

Rangovision

I need to run — the wife needs computer help and I still need to stretch — so only a minute or so of verbal vomit: We saw Rango this weekend, which was highly entertaining. My challenge was keeping up with all of the movie references. Star Wars, Chinatown, pretty much every Clint Eastwood western, Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas . . . (more…)

Lights Out

Sitting in darkness on a morning like this, it is the little things that I miss most. Lights. Heat. Refrigeration. Yes, I am truly back in Humboldt. I know because we are ten hours into a power outage and I am being reminded of the one thing North Idaho did better: Keep the lights on. (more…)

Through the Eyes of Jennifer

I have been to Lake Tahoe. I have been to Reno. I have never been to Las Vegas. Other than after reading an article in Sunset Magazine, I have not had the urge to visit Vegas. Perhaps it is because I lack the gambler’s spirit, unaffected by the call of the slot machines and craps tables. Or perhaps it is because I find the thought of DisneyLand for Degenerates slightly offputting. (more…)

Girl-Child Skiing

It is 8 a.m. and I am ready to go back to bed. I dropped the girl-child off at her school this morning at 5:30 for a ski trip, which should be interesting. The local highway signs are announcing that chains are required at Blue Lake, which is only a few miles inland. Knowing Humboldt, though, that probably means that someone thought they saw a snowflake and assumed the sky was falling. (more…)

Oh God, The SMELL!!!

The girl-child just wandered in with a stack of books reeking of mildew (the books, not the girl-child). She is going to learn about “The Patterns of Plausible Reasoning,” “The Science of Decision-Making,” “Journeys Out Of Body” and a few other subjects from the past 5 decades. Mathematics is based on guessing? Really? I see some creative arguments over grades in the near future . . .

What else do we have here? A book about the near future: 1994, and some more mathematical philosophy. Oh yeah, parent-teacher conferences, here we come. Great. My hands are mildewy now. This is one of those rare times that I’d support a book burning, just to get rid of the smell and the soon-to-come allergies/asthma from the boy-child. She must have found the local branch of the library of Hell. I plan on taking a journey out of body when it comes time for school counseling.
